What Is Cosmetic Bonding?
Cosmetic bonding involves the application of composite resin, a putty-like material, to the surface of an esthetically-displeasing tooth. Dr. Rifkin may recommend cosmetic bonding to correct teeth that are gapped, chipped, fractured, abnormally-shaped, or severely discolored. Composite resin is an effective cosmetic material because it can be sculpted or shaped to match the appearance of natural enamel.
We also color-match the composite to the existing shade of your tooth, making it virtually indistinguishable from the rest of your enamel. Composite bonding also has restorative value. Most cavities these days are filled with composite resin, rather than amalgam (silver fillings), due to its aesthetic advantages.
The Cosmetic Bonding Procedure
During your appointment, Dr. Rifkin will determine if you are a suitable candidate for cosmetic bonding. In most cases, the procedure can be completed within the same appointment. After we determine the new shape, size, or color of your tooth, we will use a shade guide to select the composite resin that best matches your surrounding teeth.
Next, we will slightly etch the surface of the tooth that will receive the composite resin. A rougher exterior will help the composite better bond to the surface of the tooth. We will then coat the surface with a conditioning liquid that also aids in the bonding process. Once the area is properly prepared, Dr. Rifkin will apply the composite resin.
The composite will be molded and smoothed out until we achieve the proper shape. We will then use an ultra-violet curing light to bond the material to the tooth. The ultra-violet light also hardens the composite quickly. Once the bonding is secure, we will trim any excess material, and polish the area until it matches the sheen of your natural enamel.
Generally speaking, the cosmetic bonding procedure takes about 30 minutes to an hour. If multiple teeth are involved we may ask you to schedule additional appointments. Once you leave our office, your bonded tooth will not require any special treatment. Regular brushing and flossing can improve the lifespan of your bonded tooth. If you notice any abnormalities with your bite or sharp edges, be sure to schedule an appointment with us as soon as possible. We may need to repair or replace the bonding.

Benefits of Cosmetic Bonding
Cosmetic bonding is one of the most common procedures we perform. Dr. Rifkin offers this procedure because it has many benefits. First and foremost, it is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to improve the esthetics of a tooth. In many ways, it is also a conservative approach.
Other restorations like dental crowns and veneers involve a more extensive procedure that usually requires multiple appointments. This appliances also require the removal of healthy tooth enamel. Cosmetic bonding is ideal for patients that want a quick fix for a minor issue. For those who want to explore a more permanent and durable solution, Dr. Rifkin may recommend veneers.
